Mood Garden

Moods are defined as a state of mind or emotion; an inclination or disposition of the mind. Moods however have extremes that are irrational states, highly debilitating, often life-threatening. On the deep or depressed end, a person experiences lows in energy, hope, desire, relationships, performance etc, extreme weakness, suicidal ideations.  On the high end, or mania, a person experiences grandiosity, heightened sense of awareness, high energy levels, limited or no sleep or need for sleep; accompanied by a sense of euphoria (euphoric mania) , or irritability and violent behavior (dysphoric mania).

These extremes are a medical condition called mood disorders: primarily depression and bipolar disorder. Knowledge is critical to dealing with this condition, and you can find in-depth articles and information and valuable resources at  www.dbsalliance.org, www.mcmanweb.com and other sites (see links).

Mood disorders are treatable, but require a patient to manage his or her own treatment and condition their lifestyle with awareness. Support groups go a long way in managing these illnesses. On this site, we have listed some existing support groups in New Jersey and more are planned. We also have a very active support forum and chat.
